Explore Peru with local Experts

The Cordillera Vilcanota is an impressive range of mountains which include the massive Salkantay snowcapped mountain (6,264 meters) and three others over 6000 meters that you will appreciate while trekking along the Salkantay Trail.

Salkantay is an outstanding snow peak, located less than fifty miles northwest of the city of Cuzco in south central Peru. It is the highest mountain of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. Because of its proximity to the city, it is easily accessible and is climbed frequently. Join us on this incredible Salkantay Trekking Tour to Machu Picchu.

This Peru Trek allows travelers to combine the challenge of a mountain trek with a deep immersion on Inca culture. Discover the best of Peru's Andean landscapes during this rewarding five-day Trek to Machu Picchu that winds through wonderful valleys, charming mountain villages, lush orchards, and dense rainforests. The entire journey is breathtaking, perfectly organized to end at Machu Picchu, one of the Seven New Wonders of the World and Peru's most treasured historic site. Winding its way along the majestic Andes, the Salkantay Trail begins at Mollepata starting point before passing through Soraypampa, Challway overnight stop and Santa Teresa. The path is accentuated by dramatic cliffs, rugged mountains and tiny andean villages. The most impressive sight you’ll witness along the trail is the imposing Salkantay mountain and the glaciers that surround it.

Salkantay 5-day Testimonials

Having already spent three days exploring Cusco independently, I was well acclimatized and ready for the challenge. The trek itself was perfectly organized with breathtaking scenery. The absolute highlight was the visit to Cocalmayo Hot Springs on day three, soaking in those mineral-rich waters with mountains all around was pure bliss after conquering Salkantay Pass the previous day. My muscles completely recovered overnight! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about Inca history and local ecology. Thanks amigos.

Had a great time on my Salkantay Trek! Our guide was great. He was very attentive and friendly. He explained the plan for each day the night before and made sure we were ok with them. On the trail, the guide explained and pointed out landmarks and points of interest as well as animals and plants. When we were tired the team kept us motivated but encouraged us to take picture and water breaks when needed. The food was great and plentiful. The camp sites were clean and well maintained. Planning the tour was easy. I would recommend this trek to all my friends and family.

As a first experience in Peru, this trek was an incredible way to live a great Peruvian experience! The trek is sometimes hard and demanding, but the landscapes and cultural experiences are totally worth it. Our guide gave us great explanations and always cared about our comfort. The food and overall comfort between the hikes were excellent, much more than what I was expecting at first. Despite the fact that our campsites were not always in the mountain (sometimes small local campsite in the village) our level of comfort was quite fine. The visit to Santa Teresa on the third day was greatly appreciated as we could rest a bit and enjoy the warm waters. Overall, it was an amazing experience, lots of breathtaking landscapes and lots of fun with 'la familia'. Thanks!!

This is a challenging hike but has a variety of views and scenery. The rocky peaks and Mt. Salkantay are amazing - my poor little camera was less than adequate. Our guide and staff worked very hard to make it a successful trek for everyone. The wake up tea each morning was wonderful. I had a great time and would totally recommend this hike and company to anyone up for taking it on. The office staff were also very helpful with coordination and logistics. Thank you for a memorable trip and experience. It will be fun to share with friends and family.

I took the five-day/four-night Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu and it was easily one of the best experiences I've ever had. The hike was pretty tough, especially on the second day when we trekked up to the Salkantay pass, but remained doable by everyone in our group. I was in awe of the incredible views that were scattered throughout the hike; we saw lakes, mountains, and dense jungle within the first half of the trip. Our guide did an excellent job leading our group and encouraged us to bond, resulting in a supportive/familial atmosphere both on our hike and in our campsite. I absolutely loved this trek and would recommend it to anyone who is up for the challenge!!!.

Common Questions About the 5 days Salkantay Trek | Classic Salkantay to Machu Picchu Trek .

The 5-day Salkantay Trek is challenging. You'll ascend to 4,600 meters (15,091 feet) at Abra Salkantay pass and trek 7-8 hours on some days, covering diverse terrains from highlands to forests. This journey is more strenuous than the Classic Inca Trail due to steeper climbs and higher elevation gains. We recommend beginning cardio and strength training at least 2-3 months before the starting date, especially focusing on uphill hiking with a loaded daypack.

The main difference is the trekking all the way to Machu Picchu in 5 days, rather than taking transportation between Sahuayaco and Santa Teresa in shorter versions. Spending a full night in Santa Teresa (Day 3), allows to visit the Cocalmayo hot springs with more time. You'll appreciate the dramatic transition from alpine to jungle ecosystems, take photos, and interact with local communities. The 5-day route features the same spectacular highlights—Humantay Lake, Salkantay Pass, and Machu Picchu—but with additional recovery time, making it perfect for those seeking a more balanced adventure.

In the high Andean regions (Days 1-2), watch for Andean condors, viscachas (resembling rabbits), and plants like yaretas and queñua trees that survive extreme conditions. As you descend through cloud forests (Day 2-3), you'll encounter over 300 orchid species, colorful hummingbirds, and medicinal plants like muña that locals use for altitude sickness. In the lower jungle regions (Days 3-4), spot blue butterflies, various tanager birds, bromeliads, and heliconia flowers.

The 5-day Salkantay Trek follows a smart acclimatization strategy, beginning at Cusco (3,400m), then gradually moving to Soraypampa (3,900m) before tackling Salkantay Pass (4,600m) on Day 2. This progression gives your body crucial time to adapt. We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco 2-3 days before your trek, this pre-acclimatization significantly reduces altitude sickness risk. During this time, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, eat lightly, and take gentle walks around the city. During the trek, sip coca or muña tea (a local remedy), and inform your guide immediately if you experience headaches, nausea, or dizziness. Our guides carry oxygen and are trained to recognize altitude issues.

The Cocalmayo hot springs are an absolute highlight of the 5day Salkantay Trek. Located few minutes from Santa Teresa in a beautiful riverside setting, these natural thermal baths range from 38-44°C (100-111°F) and are rich in healing minerals including sulfur, calcium, and magnesium. Cocalmayo offers a more authentic experience with pools of varying temperatures cascading down toward the Santa Teresa River. The warm waters work magic on tired hiking muscles while you're surrounded by lush jungle vegetation and the sounds of flowing water. Many trekkers describe this unexpected jungle spa experience as the perfect midpoint reward that rejuvenates both body and spirit for the remainder of the journey.

Our 5-day Salkantay to Machupicchu Trek includes high-quality camping equipment designed for Andean conditions. We provide spacious 4-season camping tents, thick air sleeping mats for insulation from the cold ground, comfortable dining tents with tables and chairs, and a separate kitchen tent. While we supply all eating utensils and camping infrastructure, we recommend renting a sleeping bag rated for -5°C/23°F if you don't have your own. Remember, nights at Soraypampa (3,900m) can drop below freezing, while lower elevations are warmer but may require protection from mosquitoes. All camping equipment is transported by our team so you can focus on enjoying the trek

The 5-day Salkantay Trek features a remarkable culinary journey showcasing authentic Peruvian Andean cuisine. Our skilled mountain chefs prepare nutritious meals daily plus tea time snacks, all using fresh local ingredients. Breakfasts include options like quinoa porridge, pancakes with native fruits, scrambled eggs, and coca tea. Lunches and dinners feature traditional specialties including lomo saltado (beef stir-fry), trucha a la plancha (grilled local trout), causa rellena (layered potato dish), and hearty quinoa soups. We happily accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs when specified during booking. The journey also introduces you to regional ingredients like locally grown avocados, and chicha morada (purple corn drink). Many trekkers are amazed by the culinary quality possible in remote mountain kitchens.

The Salkantay Trek challenge is traversing from alpine environments (as cold as -5°C/23°F at night) to humid jungle (up to 28°C/82°F). Think strategic layering: pack moisture-wicking base layers, quick-dry hiking shirts/pants, a warm fleece, packable down jacket, waterproof shell, and convertible pants. Bring both a sun hat and warm beanie, lightweight gloves, wool hiking socks (4-5 pairs), and broken-in waterproof hiking boots. As you descend to Santa Teresa, you'll appreciate having shorts, a lightweight long-sleeve shirt (sun/insect protection), and sandals for hot springs. Essential accessories include a headlamp, quick-dry towel, biodegradable soap, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. Consider renting trekking poles for steep sections.

The ideal season for the 5-day Salkantay Trek is from May through September (dry season) when clear skies offer stunning views of snow-capped Salkantay (6,271m) and trail conditions are optimal. June-August provides the most reliable weather but brings higher visitor numbers. April/May and September/October offer excellent 'shoulder season' alternatives with fewer crowds. The November-March rainy season transforms the landscape with vibrant greenery and blooming orchids in the cloud forest sections, but expect afternoon showers (particularly December-February) and occasional muddy trails. February typically sees the heaviest rainfall, sometimes causing trail closures. Regardless of season, this route's diverse microclimates mean you should always be prepared for temperature swings and precipitation possibilities.

Your safety is our absolute priority throughout the Salkantay Trekking. Our professional guides are certified in wilderness first aid and high-altitude emergencies. Every group travels with a complete first aid kit, oxygen cylinder, and evacuation equipment. Our guides monitor weather conditions daily, adjusting routes when necessary, and conduct regular wellness checks with all trekkers. In case of medical issues, we have established evacuation protocols with access to saddle horses for transport to vehicle access points. Our team knows the terrain, allowing you to focus on the incredible journey while knowing you're in experienced hands even in this challenging mountain environment.
